What is AI model routing? Why one app beats five AI subscriptions

AI model routing sends each request to the model best suited for it. Here's how it works, when it helps, and how to use it without paying for five separate AI apps.

AI model routing means your request is sent to the AI model that suits it best, instead of always going to the same one. A coding question can go to a strong coding model, a research question to a model that searches the web and cites sources, and a quick rewrite to a fast, inexpensive model — all from one chat box.

Why one model isn't best at everything

Every AI model is trained and tuned differently. Some are excellent at long, careful reasoning. Some are fast and cheap for everyday writing. Some are connected to live web search. Others are better with code, images or structured data.

If you use a single AI app, you get that company's models and their trade-offs for every task. Many people end up paying for two or three AI subscriptions and copying the same question between them to compare answers.

How routing works

A router looks at your request before it is answered and decides what kind of work it is. In EsteemWay, that happens in three steps:

  1. Understand the request. Is it research that needs sources, code, writing, analysis, an image, or a quick factual answer?
  2. Pick the model. The request goes to the model that does that kind of work best within your plan — for example a web-search model for "latest GST rate changes", or a coding model for "fix this Python error".
  3. Show what answered. The model that replied is labelled on every response, so you always know which AI you are reading.

You can always override it. If you prefer a specific model, pick it from the model picker and your messages go there until you switch back to Auto.

When routing helps most

  • Mixed workdays. An email draft, a spreadsheet formula, a market question and a slide outline in the same hour — each gets a suitable model without you switching apps.
  • Research. Questions about recent events, prices or regulations go to models that search the web and show sources you can check.
  • Cost control. Simple tasks don't need the most expensive model. Routing simple prompts to fast models makes your plan's allowance go further.
  • Teams. Everyone uses one tool with one bill instead of a mix of personal AI subscriptions.

When to pick a model yourself

Routing is a good default, but choosing manually makes sense when:

  • you are comparing how two models answer the same prompt,
  • a workflow depends on one model's specific behaviour or formatting, or
  • you want the most capable model for an important piece of work regardless of cost.

How to get the best results

Routing picks the right model, but a clear prompt still decides the quality of the answer.

Say what you want done, give the context that matters, add constraints such as budget, location or length, and describe the output you want — for example "a table comparing three options in ₹". EsteemWay's prompt score rates your prompt out of 10 as you type and can rewrite it in one click.

Frequently asked questions

No. One AI app uses its own company's models. A router chooses between models from several providers for each request, and shows you which one answered.
